Ahh, the old asphalt patch on a concrete highway.
We have a 6-lane concrete highway on a steep hill that was causing traction problems in wet weather.
So they paved over it with about 2” of asphalt.
Within a month, all the expansion joints had shed their asphalt and became about 4x larger in the process. Plus flying chunks of asphalt!

You think that’s a highway? That’s cute. This is damn near every road of every variety in SE Michigan.

Concrete surface streets are the devil. I know they work better in extremely hot climates (they’re all over the Southwest)

Ironically enough, based in Ann Arbor. But they have yet to perform any road work in this state ...

And all of that loose asphalt gets thrown up into the air and stuck to your car.

I always felt like those patches just made things worse. Especially after seeing some guys just shovel some asphalt into a hole, sort of, and then lightly tap it down with the shovel. Nothing at all to compress it beyond that.
Was one of the many things that drove me to insanity in Michigan, and made me quite glad to move away after college.

that’s like glass compared to some other roads I’ve been on recently. for a real good time, take a roll down Mt. Elliott/Conant on the Detroit-Hamtramck border.
edit: or this lovely patch of road I drive every day. this is from two years ago, and it’s significantly worse today.

I was going for width (6 lane “highway”), which in hindsight makes less sense.
I’m in that area a lot, Hammtrammccckkk Drive actually makes me upset. But at myself, like how did I forget how shitty this road is. Looks just like Rotunda.

Come to central florida where they waited to long to fix anything so now the whole tri county area is a construction zone.
...except for Downtown John Young Parkway, where hungry potholes eat carparts. We’re just gonna leave that part to keep things interesting for you.

They’re fine down there but when you combine our constant stream of snow plows with all those expansion gaps you get some seriously fucked up roads. Cold patch like this is a shit solution to a shittier road plan. They should all be deep asphalt. It infuriates me that my taxes pay for this shit.
